Businesses, benefit providers and legal requirements are some entities that may ask you for a certified copy of a death certificate. The Banfield Funeral Home will obtain one or more certified copies of the death certificate. When deciding how many death certificates to purchase, you must first inventory the assets for which a benefit shall be paid. Be sure to include a copy for entities that require a legal notification or a legal transfer of ownership. Your attorney and/or accountant can also assist you.
Check with individual entities (financial companies, banks, trusts, etc. to determine if they require a certified copy for their records or if a photocopy will do. Death certificates have a Cause of Death section. This information on death certificates is CONFIDENTIAL under Florida law. Cause of Death should not be included when requesting copies for probate issues, real estate taxes, property claims, vehicle title transfers, or closing bank accounts. Most life insurance companies require that the Cause of Death section be on the certified copy of the death certificate.
