Obituary for Anna Jackson Unroe
Anna Jackson Unroe was born Feb 1, 1933, in Camden, NJ to Philip Jackson and Florence McFarland Jackson. She was the youngest of 6 children. She peacefully ascended into the loving arms of Jesus August 7, 2021, while surrounded by her loving family.
Anna graduated from Merchantville High School in Merchantville NJ in 1950, and continued her education at Baptist Bible Seminary in Johnson City NY where she received a Bachelor of Religious Education degree.
Anna received Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior when she was 6 years old.
Since that time, her goal has been to live her life for Him. She was active in her church youth groups, choir, and misc. activities.
While attending Bible college, Anna met the love of her life, Elzie Unroe. They were married August 13, 1955 at Haddon Heights Baptist Church in Haddon Heights NJ, in the eye of Hurricane Connie. Anna always joked that she knew their marriage would withstand anything since they survived a hurricane!
She continued to serve the Lord when, in 1958, with a 6 week old daughter, she and Elzie would move to South Dakota to serve as missionaries among the Lakota Sioux Indians. She raised 4 children, and would become a foster mom to more than 50 children. She also taught piano lessons, substituted as a music teacher at the local elementary school, bowled on a weekly league, helped many Indian families with food or clothing, was a Sunday School teacher and pianist at the church, organized and coordinated camp meetings, and always used her life and talents as a testimony for God.
They would move several times during their (almost) 66 year marriage. No matter where they went, or how long they stayed, Anna was always serving the Lord in some capacity.
Anna loved to have fun and she enjoyed life. She was rarely seen without her infectious smile and could make even the grumpiest person smile when she smiled at them! She was an accomplished pianist, an avid reader of any printed material reading her Bible daily before anything else, and she loved to do puzzles of any kind, her favorite being crossword puzzles. In the last 25 or so years, Anna returned to a passion she had in high school and she became a prolific poet, writing poems any time of day or night, on anything that was able to be written upon anywhere a subject or phrase would hit her. She always kept a pen and notepad next to her bed should a poem occur in the middle of the night (which it often did)! She wrote for special occasions, for family and friends, birthdays and anniversaries, or about her beloved husband. But mostly she wrote about Christ, His word and teachings, and all things pertaining to Christianity.
Anna had a full life and was a blessing and friend to everyone she met.
Anna leaves behind Elzie, her husband of 66 years; daughters Nancy (Karl) Chadrick of Medway, OH, Becky (Mark) Anderson of LaPorte, IN, Judy Masterson of Sanford, FL; and son Timothy (Susan) of McCordsville, IN. She also leaves behind 9 grandchildren, and 10 great grand children. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, and 5 siblings.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Organization for research toward a cure for this disease. This request is made since Anna, her mother, 1 sister, and 3 brothers have all passed away from complication due to Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Thank you.
