Obituary for Carl John Casano
Carl John Casano, 88, of Winter Springs, Florida passed away peacefully at home on June 28th, 2022.
The eldest of four children, Carl was born to John and Mildred Casano, in Brooklyn, New York on January 29, 1934. After graduating from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, he played college football for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then joined the Army and served in the National Guard.
In 1965, he married the love of his life, Barbara Povisil. They enjoyed dinners and dancing at the Rathskeller, bowling, and watching submarine races at Canarsie Pier. They eventually settled in South Setauket, Long Island, where they would raise five children. They continued dancing and we all got to experience their love of the Lindy at weddings and special events.
Carl was a wonderful father and always encouraged his children to follow their dreams. He enjoyed traveling with family and friends, and soaking in life’s experiences. He would often notice and point out the small things all around us- a bird, a tree, a beautiful cloud. He was an avid bird-watcher and created a backyard haven for them. He loved poetry and singing, often singing throughout the day. He enjoyed games with the kids and always won in Trivial Pursuit. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, shucking clams, and large gatherings in the yard. He was a skilled vegetable gardener, and used his produce to make delicious meals, including his famous summer spaghetti.
After retiring from a successful career in sales, Carl and Barbara moved to Winter Springs, Florida. He enjoyed playing bingo with new friends, going to the movies, and continuing to travel. He appreciated the Florida wildlife and was always excited to tell us about the turtles, birds, and the occasional alligator in the lake behind their home.
Carl will be truly missed by all those that knew and loved him.
Carl is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara, and by his children: Linda of Las Vegas, NV; Christine and her husband Richard Trautwein of Pequannock, NJ; Carl and his wife Lisa of Holtsville, NY; John and his wife Corinne of Grafton, MA; and Caryn of Jupiter, FL. He is also survived by his brother John and his wife Casey of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; his sister Carolyn Ahrens of South Orange, NJ; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Fernando Lopez of Oviedo, FL. Carl is also survived by his seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Carl was preceded in death by his sister Lorraine of Brooklyn, NY.
Family and friends may visit from 3-7 PM on Wednesday, July 6th at Banfield Funeral Home in Winter Springs, FL. Carl will be laid to rest at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
