Obituary for Charles G. Shaw

Charles Garland Shaw, age 90, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026. He was born on August 4, 1935, and spent much of his life in Central Florida, where he created a home that was always filled with family, laughter, and good food.

Charles grew up in Longwood, Florida, and graduated from Lyman High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army before continuing his education at Florida State University, where he earned a degree in Business and was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.

In 1962, Charles settled in Winter Springs, Florida, where he lived for more than sixty years. His home quickly became the heart of family gatherings. The Shaw house was rarely quiet — it was known for its open door, home-cooked meals, laughter around the table, and barbecues by the pool where family and friends were always welcome.

Charles was loved by many and had a generous spirit that showed in the way he cared for those around him. He was always trying to make sure everyone had something to eat, never letting anyone leave his home hungry. Food, family, and time together were some of the things he treasured most. Every holiday, without fail, he made his famous ambrosia salad — a tradition that became a beloved staple at family gatherings.

He was also an avid sports fan, especially when it came to his beloved Florida State Seminoles. FSU football games were always on the television, and he could be found cheering them on with enthusiasm. And if Florida State wasn’t playing, he was just as happy rooting for whoever happened to be playing against the Florida Gators.

Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marietta Shaw; his daughter, Cynthia Shaw; his parents, Elena Shaw and Charles Shaw Sr.; and his sister, Jeanette Hallbeck.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Fore of DeLand, Florida; his siblings, Michael Shaw of Texas and Melanie Posey of Port Orange, Florida; his grandchildren, Heather Eshack of Sanford, Florida, Jillian Zwegat of Orange City, Florida, Nicole Morrow of Thornton, Colorado, and Rachel Dedmon of Yulee, Florida; and his great-grandchildren, Alexia Darabasz of Thornton, Colorado, and Renner Charles Dedmon of Yulee, Florida.

Charles spent his final year at Marina Isle Waterfront Assisted Living, where he continued to be surrounded by care and support.

He will be remembered for his welcoming home, his love of family gatherings, his big smile, his devotion to his Florida State Seminoles, and the warmth he shared with everyone who walked through his door. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the many memories created around his table.
