Obituary for Ellen W. Cooper
Ellen Wanamaker Cooper, wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on April 30, 2020 from Alzheimer’s disease. Ellen was born in Gary, Indiana in 1940, where she lived until moving to St. Petersburg, Florida with her parents and two younger sisters in 1951. Ellen went on to graduate from the University of Florida with a teaching degree and she later received her masters degree from Rollins College after moving the central Florida area. She enjoyed teaching elementary school, especially the 4th and 5th grades, and taught for 31 years before transitioning to a happy retirement.
Ellen loved traveling, riding her bike for miles, working in the yard, and being with her many dogs. She was happiest spending time with her husband and family and was a supportive presence in her children’s lives, even as some moved further away. She was a loving grandmother who enjoyed doing fun activities with her four grandchildren, writing each of them a journal about their shared adventures.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Alan Cooper, her three children, Elizabeth Spencer, Jennifer Chase, and William Rippard, two stepchildren, Kimberly Brown and Keith Cooper, and her sister Jean Schlitt. She is preceded in death by her parents, John Edward Wanamaker and Louise Bach Wanamaker, and her sister Barbara Vogt.
Ellen will be remembered in a private family gathering and the family kindly requests any donations be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or Arden Court in her name. She will be dearly missed.
