Obituary for Elzie Unroe
Elzie Garland Unroe was born May, 9, 1930 in Dayton Ohio to Earl Unroe and Fay Sheets Unroe, the youngest of 6 children. He was welcomed into the arms of Jesus August 15, 2021 at the age of 91.
During Elzie’s junior year of High School, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. It was during his senior year that he fully dedicated his life to serve the Lord in whatever he was called to do. He graduated May 25, 1949 from Jefferson Township HS in Jefferson Ohio and continued his education at Baptist Bible Seminary in Johnson City New York, where he received a diploma in Bible Studies. It was also there that he met Anna Jackson. She was the love of his life and would become his wife on August 13, 1955.
3 years later, after Elzie’s ordination into the ministry, he, Anna, and 6 week old Nancy, would move to Mission South Dakota to begin missionary work among the Lakota Sioux Indians. They left South Dakota in 1977, having established Grace Baptist Church, the first Baptist church on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. Even tho’ Elzie’s ministry would take him to Nebraska, Iowa, and Utah before his retirement, his heart always remained in South Dakota with the Indian people.
Elzie & Anna moved to Florida in 2013 due to health issues. He became a member of Countryside Baptist Church in Lake Mary and continued to serve the Lord, doing whatever was within his ability to do.
Elzie was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Anna, on August 7, 2021, his parents, and 5 siblings.
He leaves behind his 4 children: Nancy (Karl) Chadrick of Medway Ohio, Becky (Mark) Anderson of LaPorte Indiana, Judy Masterson of Sanford Florida, and Timothy (Susan) Unroe of McCordsville Indiana, 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
At Elzie’s request, donations may be made in his name to:
