Obituary for Fred William Fergus

Fred W. Fergus, 82, of Sanford, FL, and formerly of Effingham, IL, passed peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 7, 2024. Born on March 23, 1941, at the Marion Country Club, Marion, Illinois, Fred's journey through life was marked by significant achievements, numerous leadership roles, heartfelt friendships, and a devoted family man. He was a humble man with a strong faith serving as a Deacon in the Christian Church.

A graduate of Bosse High School, class of 1958, Evansville, IN. Fred excelled in baseball as a first baseman and attended tryouts for the Philadelphia Phillies. He also was a member of the DeMolay Youth Group. Following high school, he served as an assistant manager at F. W. Woolworth Dimestore. He further pursued his education and was a member of the ROTC program at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL, then served his country with pride in the USAF at Truax Field, Madison, WI. During his time in the Air Force, Fred showcased his passion for baseball as a member of the base traveling softball team.

On August 8, 1964, Fred married the love of his life, Joyce Ann (Sipple) Fergus at the First Christian Church, Madison, WI. After an honorable discharge from the USAF in 1965, Fred dedicated most of his working years to the family business. He was employed by Arab Termite & Pest Control, Indianapolis, IN, followed by co-ownership of Arab Termite & Pest Control of Washington D.C., Rockville, MD. Fred and his family moved to Effingham, IL, where he later became proprietor of Arab Termite & Pest Control and an active member of the Arab Associates until his retirement in 2005. He enjoyed his retirement years in Florida spending his time singing karaoke.

Fred was an avid St. Louis Cardinal and Green Bay Packer fan and stockholder. He was a past president of the Effingham Quarterback Club. With a Masonic journey spanning 62 years, he was a Master Mason, a member of the Ainad Temple, a 32nd-degree member of the Scottish Rite, and a Noble in the Shrine. His commitment extended to the Effingham Hearts Shrine Club, the Fire Patrol Unit participating in many parades, and Effingham Masonic Lodge No.149. Fred also lent his talents to the Almas Shrine Temple Clown Unit partaking in many parades and performing at the White House for the Embassy Children’s Christmas party hosted by former First Lady Mrs. Nixon where he had the privilege of meeting her.

Additionally, Fred was a former board member of the American Legion Post No. 120, Effingham, IL, and then transferred his membership to American Legion Post No. 53, Sanford, FL. He was a member of the Effingham Elks Lodge No. 1016 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 4469, Daytona Beach Shores, FL. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club, Indianapolis, IN, and Coles County Corvette Club, Charleston, IL, adding diverse dimensions to his community involvement.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mary (Gulley) Fergus, and his son, Carl D. Fergus II, along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Fred leaves behind a legacy of love, cherished by his family and many friends especially his Florida coffee crew and Packer buddies.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce, his son, Fred II; Sarah Fergus, grandchildren Jared (Heather) Smith and great-grandchildren: Jaxon, Addi, and Evelyn; Kurtis (Tiffany) Dykes and great-grandchildren: Nora & Macy Jo, Jordyn & Wyatt; brother Bob (Debbie) Fergus, sister-in-law Janice (Tony) Hiers and family; Aunt Dorothy Wade, Aunt Marcella Gretizinger; nephews Greg, Peyton, and Emma Fergus; Bryan Fergus and family; Josh Fergus and family; nieces Jeni (Tom) Stafford, Andrew, Lauren, and Alex; Ann (Shua), Payne, and Harry Gambill.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the many family and friends for all their love and support. A special thank you to the Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute, Lake Mary, FL. The Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 20th, 2024, 1:00 pm ET at the First United Methodist Church, 419 South Park Ave, Sanford, FL. Cremation was handled by Banfield Funeral Home & Crematory, Winter Springs, Florida
