Gerould (Gerry) W. Maurer of Longwood, FL passed away on November 2, 2022, following a brief illness. Gerry passed just two months after celebrating his 90th birthday party with family and friends.
Gerry was born in Dover, Ohio on August 31, 1932, to parents Orlo and Lucile Maurer. He earned degrees from Otterbein College (1955 – Math) Carnegie Technical Institute (1956 -Mechanical Engineering) and a masters from The University of Pittsburgh (1960- Mechanical Engineering). His professional life included working in research and development for the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Pittsburgh, PA., U.S. Steel, and ARCO Medical Products Company on projects including nuclear reactor technology, pipeline transfer of solids, nuclear powered heart pacers and artificial hearts. In 1978, he moved to Florida to work for Martin Marietta Corp. in facility capital planning. He held several patents and authored many articles for technical journals.
Gerry had many interests and hobbies. In his early adult life in Pennsylvania, he maintained a small hobby farm raising livestock, sweet corn and his boys. After moving to Florida in 1978, his interests turned to outdoor activities to include walking, biking, and tennis. He also had a love of music, playing trombone in a local adult band and singing in a Bach choir. Gerry stayed active with all of these well into his 80s, still getting in his walking “steps” until the onset of his recent illness
Also of note, Gerry spent much time mentoring youth through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Orlando.
Gerry was preceded in death by his parents and by his sisters Sara Traynor and Glenda Kelly. He is survived by his wife Sheri, sons Ed and Chuck; 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
He will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony, and his family is suggesting friends remember Gerry smiling and laughing as he celebrated his 90th birthday.
