Obituary for Grant Barnard

Grant Charles Barnard, 84, of Casselberry, Florida passed away peacefully on April 16th, 2019. Born January 12, 1935 in Woodbury, NJ, Grant was the third of four children born to Grant and Eva Barnard. Dottie, Bob, Grant, and Gordy were raised in New Jersey until moving to Winter Park, FL in 1952. It was after moving to Florida that Grant was introduced to Fern Elizabeth Chambers who became his beloved wife on January 18, 1953. They were married at the Church of the Brethren in Winter Park, FL where the family has celebrated many baptisms, reunions, and special events over the couple’s 66 years of marriage.

Grant and Fern Barnard together raised three sons who remain in the greater Orlando area. Their family legacy includes son Glenn Steven Barnard, daughter-in-law Patti Barnard (Burke), grandchildren Meghan Louise Griffin (Barnard) and Rachel Diane Barnard; son Gary Allen Barnard, daughter-in-law Debbie Barnard (Hamm), grandchildren Gary Allen Barnard, Daniel Grant Barnard, and Jacob Glenn Barnard; son Michael David Barnard, daughter-in-law Mary Barnard (Matlock), and grandchildren Daniel Louis Barnard, David Forrest Barnard, and Lauren Elizabeth Barnard. Tanya Eavenson, Douglas Stroupe, sister Bonnie Warnick, nephews, and 12 great grandchildren are among Grant’s beloved family members.

Grant Barnard was known for his skill in aesthetic design which found expression in his career managing retail operations at a network of four paint and wallpaper providers. As a color specialist and design consultant, Grant had an eye for beauty that was evidenced in his choice of spouse, in his work, and in the home he and Fern maintained. Grant’s attention to style was evidenced as well in the parties and gatherings he catered or hosted and he was known to elevate every occasion with his humor and fine taste. Grant was a hard-working provider to his wife and sons and a generous grandfather. He lavished praise on his grandchildren and celebrated in their accomplishments while standing beside them in life’s hardships.

Grant spent his retirement attending family gatherings, hosting events, and celebrating countless graduations, parties, births, and weddings for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His favorite weekly activities included meals at Napoli’s (his son Gary’s restaurant) in Winter Springs as well as attending Winter Park Presbyterian Church where he would meet his coffee “drinking buddy” Dave Miller to enjoy the worship, teaching, and meaningful friendships provided by his loving church family.

Grant Charles Barnard is honored now by his family who continue his legacy of hard work and cherishing time together. Grant was a beloved husband to Fern, respected father to his sons, doting grandpa to his 9 grandchildren, and fun “G-pa” to his 12 great-grandchildren. The family rejoices as Grant is welcomed into the arms of Jesus and is reunited with Gaye Elizabeth, Fern and Grant’s first child and only daughter.

The memorial and celebration of life service will be on Sunday, April 28th at Winter Park Presbyterian Church. The service will begin at 2:00 pm with a reception following. Flowers may be sent to Winter Park Presbyterian Church at 400 S Lakemont Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32792.
