Obituary for James B. Veates

James (Jimmy) Baker Veates, son of the late Leo V. Veates, Sr. and Rossie Ross Veates, was born July 20, 1920 in Bainbridge, Georgia. He went to be with the Lord on January 3, 2023 in Longwood, Florida at the age of 102, 5 months, 20 days. When Jimmy was a year old, his family moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he lived until he joined the U.S. Navy (Aviation Division) at age 21. After the Navy, most of his working years were spent at Lockheed Martin in Marietta, Georgia doing quality control on aircraft. Jimmy married the love of his life, Velma Hardin, on October 9, 1946, a year before he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy.


Jimmy loved God and claimed Jesus Christ as his Savior. He enjoyed fishing and watching the Atlanta Braves play baseball. He spent his life as a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.


He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Larry Stevens of Longwood, Florida; grandson Jared Stevens and his wife, Megan Stevens of Winter Springs, Florida; grandson Bret Stevens of Altamonte Springs, Florida; great-grandson Tripp Stevens of Winter Springs, Florida; great-granddaughter Piper Stevens of Winter Springs, Florida, and a host of other relatives. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and six brothers and five sisters.


Banfield Funeral Home, Winter Springs, Florida is in charge of arrangements. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at All Faiths Memorial Park, Casselberry, Florida with Rev. Wayne Thomas and Rev. Christopher Grinnell from GracePointe Church officiating.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jimmy Veates Memorial fund at GracePointe Church of the Nazarene. Checks may be mailed to 421 Longwood/Lake Mary Rd., Lake Mary, FL 32746 or donations may be given online at www.gpnaz.church
