Obituary for James Barrett
James "Jim" Barrett began his journey on September 26, 1933 in Omaha, NE. He was born to James Freeman Barrett and Laura Louise Kirk. As a child, James enjoyed the outdoors playing with his brother on their family's farm and spent summers in his grandfather's movie house in Lincoln--the only air conditioned building in town. The family relocated to Miami and in 1951, he enlisted in the Army. He served in Korea during the war and returned home to Miami in 1954 where he met his partner for life, Sandra Lee Slack. They married September 16, 1955 and went on to have 4 children. He attended Florida State University and was hired out of college in 1961 by the FDIC, beginning a 34 year career as a Bank Examiner, a job he truly loved. In 1969, James was transferred to Decatur, Alabama, where he and Sandy raised their family.
Following his retirement in 1996, they moved to Winter Springs to be closer to their children. After Sandra passed in 2002, James travelled with family and his church community across Europe, the Middle East, Canada and the US. He enjoyed fishing all over central FL with his son, Michael. He was an avid reader and a lover of sports - especially Florida State Seminole football and Atlanta Braves baseball. He was a 20 year season ticket holder to the Braves Spring Training at Disney where he rarely missed a game.
From his childhood, he developed a lifelong love of animals and nature. He enjoyed being outdoors and was drawn to the beauty of all the wildlife in this area. He began everyday with prayer, comics, coffee, and the company of his sweet daughter and best friend, Kathy. Together, they enjoyed daily walks with their beloved dog, Beauregard. His devotion was to his Catholic faith, family, and friends. There was rarely a person he met who wasn't touched by his gentle, kind, and loving spirit. James drew people in with his mischievous personality and his playful, wry sense of humor. He had the ability to make anyone he came in contact with laugh and feel special. We will miss that sweet, impish smile.
James' passing has left his family saddened and lost but they take great comfort in knowing that he rests in the arms of the Lord with his beloved wife, Sandy. He is survived by his 4 children, Kevin Barrett, Daniel Barrett, Michael Barrett and Kathleen Barrett; 3 grandchildren, Erin Thomas, Kaleigh Barrett, and Julia Barrett; 2 great grandchildren, Mackenzie and Madison Thomas; brother and sister-in-law, John David and Tichka Slack, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sandra and his brother, Robert Barrett.
A memorial mass with be held at 2:00pm on Friday, November 9, 2018 in the chapel at St. Stephen Catholic Community
In lieu of flowers, please make your contributions to St. Stephen Outreach 575 Tuskawilla Rd Winter Springs FL 32708 and CHAPS Center 4952 Sanford Ave Sanford, FL 32773 (www.chapscenter.com)
