Obituary for Jim Hernan

It is with immense grief and sadness that the family of James (Jim) Leo Hernan announce his sudden passing on Tuesday, December 17, at the age of 81.

Jim was born in the town of Lancaster, Ohio to Francis and Dorothy Hernan. He earned a degree in history from Saint Francis College (PA), where Jim met his wife Andrea of 58 years. He was an avid sports fan that followed the universities of his sons and granddaughters. Also, Jim enjoyed the opportunity to golf with his family and followed his granddaughters’ athletic and academic careers. He was always quick with a joke and brought a smile to many. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

He enjoyed a varied career that included sales, real estate, and education. Jim served as a history teacher at Ursuline High School, Canton Central Catholic High School, and Titusville High School. At Ursuline, he coached the junior varsity basketball team for over a decade and guided the Irish golf team to the 1975 State Championship. In 1991, Jim earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from Nova University. While at Titusville High, he was a well-respected administrator, who pioneered a dual enrollment program between the school and local community colleges.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Andrea, son Patrick, granddaughters Hannah (26), Abigail (20), and Emily (18), daughter-in-law Heather, and brothers John and Robert. He is proceeded in death by his son Jon and his brother Frank.

A funeral mass to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Tuesday, January 7 at 10:00 a.m. at Mary, Mother of God Chapel at San Pedro Spiritual Development Center in Winter Park, FL. A burial will be at Queen of Angels Catholic Cemetery in Winter Park. A reception will immediately follow the burial at Building 500 at San Pedro.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to the American Lung Association.
