Jon Sherwood Zern passed away peacefully on August 18 surrounded by his family. He was born on June 28, 1934 in Keymar, Maryland and the fourth of six children of Leidy and Naomi Zern. He is survived by his wife, Sandra, of 66 years and his five children, Rochelle Hackett (spouse, John R. Hackett); Colette Sears; Sherwood Zern (spouse, Linda Zern); Jon David Zern (spouse, Laura Zern) and Patricia Joyce (spouse, Frank Joyce). Other living relatives include his eldest sister, Mildred Harshman of Mt. Airy, Maryland. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

He graduated from Milton Hershey School for Boys, Pennsylvania, in 1952 and served 4 years in the Air Force. He was an avid outdoors-man and tennis player, loved camping and hiking all with his wife, Sandra, by his side, he loved to dance, and playing poker with his buddies at Palm Valley. The best thing that can be said about a man is that they are a good husband and father. Jon, by every measurement that mattered, lived his life well – he was a great husband and father.

Jon’s jokes, great stories along with his infectious laugh will be missed by many, especially his poker buddies and family. The family is greatly comforted by the certain knowledge that Jon is now as he has always been in the loving arms of his Lord. The family also wishes to express its deep appreciation for the love, support and comfort which were provided to Jon and his family.

Service to be announced at a later time.

In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests donations be made in Jon’s honor and memory to Vitas Hospice ( and/or American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA).
