Obituary for Joseph (Papa Joe) Schembari
Joseph “Papa Joe” Schembari, 79, passed away at his home in Winter Springs, Florida on Tuesday, August 12, 2014. Papa Joe was surrounded by his family as he peacefully passed. He was born in Ragusa, Sicily on March 12,1935 to Salvatore and Maria Schembari. He arrived to the United States in 1954 and soon after served in the United States Army. He was a cabinet maker by trade and worked at Crown Cabinets. He was also employed by General Motors. For years he owned and operated the Union Smoke Shop on the city’s north side. Papa Joe is survived by his wife of 57 years Antonella who was the love of his life. He is also survived by two sons Salvator (Sonia) and David, two daughters Marialisa Diaz (Danny), and Natalia Joseph (Robert), six grandchildren Joseph, Jonathan, Diego, Juliana, Alessia, and Isabella. He also leaves behind 2 sisters Giuseppina Vasta and Maria Denaro (Gaspare) of Ragusa, Sicily and several nieces and nephews. Papa Joe was loved by all and truly was a kind-hearted, good-spirited man. He enjoyed his bocce ball and was an avid gardener and bowler. His grandchildren were the center of his universe. He always was quick to mention how grateful he was for all the care he received from the Syracuse VA and strongly supported all veterans. Funeral mass will be celebrated on August 15th, 2014 at St. Stephens Catholic Church, Winter Springs, FL at 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest at All Faiths Memorial Park in Casselberry, FL.
