Obituary for Lester Steele
Lester “Les” Alman Steele Jr. went to be with the Lord on August 27 2019 at home in Longwood FL at the age of 89, in the presence of his family. Les was born February 28, 1930 in Ocala, FL to Lester A Steele Sr and Edna Mae Steele.
He graduated in the top of his class from Ocala High School at the age of 16, briefly attended the University of Florida at Gainesville and later was accepted at West Point Academy. During training a physical difficulty arose and he subsequently received a medical discharge.
He began working for Florida Telephone Company as a lineman in 1953 and went on to hold several District Manager positions, notably for Mount Dora in 1958, Winter Garden in 1960 and Ocala in 1962. He helped the company through its merger with United Telecommunications, and finally retired after 40 years with the company in 1993 from his position as the Business Relations Director for the South East Region. United Telecommunications later changed its name to Sprint, and then to Century Link.
Les was an avid sports fan and he loved to bowl and golf. For most of his life he participated in amateur bowling leagues and golf tournaments. In his retirement, he joined the Senior Pro Bowling circuit for several years. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winter Garden, Central Baptist Church in Ocala and Victory Baptist Church in Sanford.
He is survived by his loving wife, Hilda Herron Steele, his children Myrna Lynne Steele and Lester Alman Steele III, his grandchildren Rachel, Jonathan, Tamara, Adam, Nicholas and Alicia, and his great-grandchildren Aiden, Zain, Madeline and Calvin. He is preceded in death by his mother Edna Waters Steele and his brother William Harvey Steele.
Services will be held at Victory Baptist Church at 4621 Hester Avenue in Sanford FL on September 12, 2019, viewing at 3:00 pm and service at 4:00 pm. There will be a graveside interment service on September 13, 2019 at 1:00 pm in Ocala Florida at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, 5740 S Pine Ave , Ocala, FL. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the missions of Victory Baptist Church or to the donor’s favorite charity.
