Obituary for Louis A. Epstein

In Cherished Memory of Louis A. Epstein (May 22, 1945 – December 3, 2023)

Louis Epstein, a beacon of charisma and a stronghold of family values, gracefully departed this world on December 3, 2023. Born in Queens, NY, against the backdrop of a world emerging from the shadows of World War II, Lou embraced a life brimming with promise and opportunity.

As the beloved firstborn of Edwin Epstein and Ruth Levy, Lou's formative years unfolded in the embrace of a loving, middle-class upbringing in the heart of New York City. His father's delayed return from the Pacific War, coupled with the honor of being named after a late grandfather, instilled in him a profound sense of resilience and continuity. Lou's educational journey commenced at PS144, soared through Forest Hills High School, where he captained the swim team, and culminated in a distinguished business degree from NYU, laying the foundation for a truly remarkable life.

In 1966, amidst the turmoil of the Vietnam War, Lou married the love of his life, Marilyn, his lifelong companion. Serving as a Captain in the Army National Guard from 1966 to 1971, Lou, though not aspiring for a military life, demonstrated unwavering duty and dedication. Following in his father's esteemed footsteps, he ascended the ranks of the building product industry, achieving the rank of Vice President of Sales by the youthful age of 27.

Lou's professional journey guided his family from the heart of New York to the crossroads of Indianapolis, Detroit, and, finally, the cherished settlement in Cincinnati, where he assumed the esteemed role of president for an aluminum company.

A visionary entrepreneur, Lou, and his beloved Marilyn co-founded Video Showplace, a video rental chain in Cincinnati, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. His leadership extended to the presidency of the Video Store Dealer Association, where he valiantly defended First Amendment rights during the legal challenges of the 1980s.

A man of deep conviction, Lou was a 32nd Degree Freemason, belonging to the Scottish Rite, embodying the values of Reverence for God, Integrity, Devotion to Country, Justice, Tolerance, and Service to Humanity. He was also a devoted Shriner, a distinction earned through his commitment as a Master Mason, showcasing the intersection of brotherhood and service.

Lou was a dedicated leader at B’nai B’rith, serving as the Cincinnati chapter president. B'nai B'rith International, dedicated to improving the quality of life globally, found in Lou a passionate advocate for human rights, Israel advocacy, stability for older adults, diversity education, and community improvement in times of crisis.

Beyond his professional success and dedication to community causes, Lou was an avid bridge player, achieving the rank of Life Master according to the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). His passion for the game reflected his strategic mind and love for intellectual challenges.

Louis and Marilyn reveled in their shared love for vacationing, with a particular fondness for the serenity of cruises that allowed them to explore the world together, see some theater and gamble a bit while creating cherished memories on the open seas.

In 2019, Lou and Marilyn embarked on a well-deserved retirement in Orlando, Florida, basking in the sunshine and closeness to family.

Lou's enduring legacy radiates through his 57-year union with Marilyn, his devoted sons Robert and David; and Steven, their loving spouses, Lisa, Jessica and Jackie and his six cherished grandchildren; Matthew, Lisa, Alex, Tony, Tyler and Zachary. Renowned for his larger-than-life personality, Lou was a genuine family man who never met a stranger. His boundless love for life, unyielding commitment, and unwavering integrity illuminated the lives of all fortunate enough to know him.

The world is undoubtedly dimmer without Louis Epstein, yet his indomitable spirit and profound impact on those he touched will resonate eternally—a testament to a life well-lived and a soul deeply cherished.
