Mary Agnes Yore Turkiewicz died peacefully at home on Saturday afternoon, March 7, 2020, following complications related to a recent surgery and fungal infection.
Mary Agnes was born on July 24, 1941, at Alice Home Hospital in Lake Forest, Illinois, to parents Helen Agnes Therese Walsak and Robert Francis Yore. They lived in Highwood, Illinois at the time of her birth.
Mary Agnes attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School in Tonawanda, New York and Mount St Mary’s Academy in Kenmore, New York, graduating in 1959. She attended Sisters of Charity Hospital Nursing School in Buffalo, New York graduating in 1962.
Mary Agnes worked at Sisters of Charity Hospital following nursing school graduation. Throughout her extensive Registered Nurse career, she worked at various hospitals, doctors’ offices, schools, nursing homes, drug and rehab facilities, parishes, and as a medical records auditor for various insurance companies and United States Government entities. She maintained her nursing license and remained informed, educated, and engaged in the field until her passing.
Mary Agnes married Richard Paul Turkiewicz in Buffalo New York on July 11, 1964 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Tonawanda, New York. They celebrated their 55th anniversary with family in Charlotte, North Carolina last summer. Mary Agnes and Richard lived in several cities throughout New York State, in Youngstown, Ohio from 1980 until they moved to Winter Springs, Florida in 1989. Mary Agnes and Richard had three children: Suzanne, Michael, and Cynthia.
In addition to Mary Agnes’ devotion to family, friends, and her nursing career, she found pure joy in playing golf, following professional golfers (especially LPGA professionals), and volunteering at the numerous Florida PGA and LPGA tournaments. She and Richard also had the opportunity to cheer on US Golf Teams at both the Rider and Solheim Cup international matches in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
Mary Agnes was an active member of the Women’s Club at University of Central Florida, specifically the Book Worms and Gourmet Dining groups, Tuscawilla Women’s Golf Association, St. Stephens Nursing Group, Bentley Green Luncheon Group, and the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America.
Mary Agnes is preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Robert Yore and daughter Cynthia Turkiewicz Christopher.
Mary Agnes is survived by her adoring husband Richard Turkiewicz, children Suzanne Elkins (spouse Jim) of Lexington, South Carolina, Michael Turkiewicz (spouse Niki) of Chicago, Illinois, and Glenn Christopher (spouse Cynthia deceased 2015) of Youngstown, Ohio, sisters Elizabeth Anne Swiatek (spouse Frank) of Cheektowaga, New York, Barbara Lansing (spouse Cooper) of Stuart, Florida, and Robyn Yore (spouse David Blask) of Buffalo, New York and sister-in-law Dr. Mary Lou Nowakowski (spouse Bill) of Savanah, Georgia, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their children.
Mary Agnes had twelve grandchildren: Kyle Zimmerle (spouse Brittany) of Cleveland, Ohio, Katie Zimmerle of Columbia, South Carolina, Shelia and Allison Christopher of Columbus, Ohio, Mary Elizabeth Elkins of Bloomington, Indiana, Nikki Elkins of Muncie, Indiana, Tristan Turkiewicz of Oxford, Mississippi, Trafford Turkiewicz of Bozeman, Montana, Glenn Christopher IV, of Youngstown, Ohio, Blythe Turkiewicz of Portland, Oregon, and Ariana and Mila Turkiewicz of Chicago, Illinois. She always found great joy in their lives and when visiting them, beating them and their parents in spirited games of Uno.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Winter Springs, Florida on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 10 AM. A gathering will take place immediately following the mass at the St. Stephens Parish Center.
Mary Agnes was extremely proud of her family, friends, career, and her Irish and Polish heritage. The family is also gathering at the St. Stephens St. Patrick’s Day party at the Parish Center at 7 PM Saturday evening, an annual event she enjoyed greatly.
Mary Agnes requested prior to her passing, in lieu of flowers donations be made to either Albin Polasek Museum, 633 Osceola Avenue, Winter Park, Florida 32789 (407-647-6294) or Mount St. Mary’s Academy, 3756 Delaware Avenue, Kenmore, New York 14217 (716-877-1358).
