Miriam Louise Wheeler Martin, 101, of Davidson died November 15,2022 at The Pines in Davidson.
Louise was born on September 28, 1921, to the late B.F. Wheeler Sr. and George Lee Wheeler in Oviedo, FL. Louise was a fourth generation Floridian (which is rare these days) who spent her early years in the local Oviedo schools and eventually graduated from Bob Jones Academy in Tennessee.
After graduation she continued her studies at Florida Southern University (formerly Florida Southern College) where she received a Bachelor of Science. While at Florida Southern she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, an organization she continued to support over the years eventually receiving her 75-y.
She married W.H. (Bill) Martin, also from Oviedo, and they shared an amazing life for more than 60 years. Louise was always very active in Oviedo. She was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Oviedo, where she was a part of many committees. She was active in UMW and a member of several different circles, including founding one for young women that is still active today. For over 40 years she served as the choir director at the church which allowed her the opportunity to sing at many weddings and funerals which she was fortunate enough to do alongside her husband Bill who played the organ in accompaniment. She was also active in the Oviedo Woman`s Club, serving different committees over the years including at least one tenure as President. In 2002 she and Bill moved to the Pines in Davidson, NC and Louise picked up right where she had left off in Florida. She became involved in groups and committees always making it a priority to meet the new residents, so much so that her family affectionately referred to her as Mayor McCheese. While she never changed her membership from the First United Methodist Church of Oviedo she did find a new home that she loved just as much at Davidson United Methodist Church.
It is a special thing to live to be 101, very few people get to experience that milestone. Many mornings Louise would wake up and say, “I’m not sure why God hasn’t come for me yet…I guess I have something left to do.” Louise loved life and made the most of it. She was a devout Methodist and even though she married a devout Baptist they made it work. She loved God and made it a point to honor him every day. She saw the beauty of the world around her and cherished its simplicity, a hummingbird at the feeder was her favorite thing to see. She loved art and music and was exceptional at both, her voice was beautiful and singing made her happy. She will be missed by everyone she knew but especially by her family. Sunday night dinners will not be the same.
She is survived by her daughter Anne M Hendrix and husband Skip of Davidson, NC, son George W Martin and wife Paula of Edgewater, FL. Four grandchildren Jeffrey Hendrix, Amy Hendrix Stiel (Don), John Martin (Emley) and Mark Martin. Five Great Grandchildren, Reid and Mary Peyton Hendrix, Brielle and Owen Stiel, and George Martin.
She was preceded in death by her husband William H Martin, Baby Boy Martin, her sister Clara Lee Evans, her brother B F Wheeler, Jr., and many cousins.ear pin.
