Obituary for Patricia Smith

Patricia Ann Smith of Winter Park, Florida aged 93, peacefully went to be with the Lord February 8, 2024.

Born in Connecticut, she was the third of six children born to the late Stephen Aloysius Stanton and Daisy Isabel Skidmore (Charles). After graduating from High School, she entered pediatric nursing at the Foundling Hospital in New York City.

She later moved with her mother and younger siblings to Tampa, Florida, where she met the love of her life, William “Bill” Smith. Patricia met Bill while he was home on leave from the Navy. He proposed after just 3 dates and the rest is history.

Their 52-year marriage found them traveling up and down the Eastern Seaboard from base to base, raising five children along the way.

In 1972, the family moved to Winter Park, Florida where Patricia was a stay-at-home mom, a manager and buyer for various national retailers and a supervisor for a national temp agency. Patricia and Bill enjoyed the beach, dancing, playing board games, and traveling with family and friends. Nobody was a stranger in her house. Patricia encouraged her children to bring their friends over which led to some lively card games around the dinner table.

A woman of deep and abiding faith, she and Bill were active in St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Winter Springs, FL where they were one of its founding families. Some of St. Stephen’s early services were held at their house before the church construction was completed.

She and Bill sang in the church choir along with being involved in the church flea market with their friends, where it went from a fun weekend thing to a money-making annual enterprise that put funds back into the church and community.

The absolute joy of her life was having all her family together under one roof, and those get-togethers were legendary. Grandma “Zoie” aka Mom-Mom was an amazing hostess and chef, with a green thumb for all things growing and was loved by everyone that knew her.

Patricia is survived by her five children: Blake (Teresa), Heidi Pesch (Richard), Kevin, Kelly Johnson, Kym Perritt and her sister Eileen Cackowski (Don Flinn). Patricia was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her brothers Dick, Steve, Brian, and Jimmy.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Ryan Pesch (Lindsey), Danny Smith (Jackie), Joshua Pesch, Heather Graham (Jon), Korey Johnson, Caitlin Smith, Isabella Perritt and four great grandchildren: Connor and Mollie Smith, Jackson Pesch, McKenna Graham and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on March 1, 2024, at the Mary Mother of God Chapel, San Pedro Center, 95 Bishop Grady Lane, Winter Park, FL 32792, followed by a reception at the St. Anthony of Padua Hall, San Pedro Center, 95 Bishop Grady Lane, Winter Park, FL 32792.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Patricia’s name can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. https://www.lls.org/article/tribute-and-memorial-gifts, or St. Jude Children Research Hospital at https://www.stjude.org
