Paul was born on August 20, 1930, in Whitney Point, New York. He was an only child, born to Margaret and Clayton Gates.
His grandparents immigrated from Germany to New York at the turn of the century. Paul’s parents owned a restaurant in New York and due to the Great Depression, moved to Florida to find work. His dad was an engineer for Shell Oil for many years.
Paul attended Forest Lake Academy for his high school years. After graduating in 1948, he attended Southern University for a year or so and then worked t the Miami Herald newspaper before being drafted into the army. He spent time in Korea during the war. After being discharged in 1953, he married Evelyn Killen and returned to Southern University, where he graduated from the Ministerial Program. He taught school and spent time working in Summer Youth Camps, and then entered into the full-time ministry.
A daughter, son and another daughter were born to Paul and Evelyn in 1954, 1957, and 1963 respectively.
He pastored in Georgia, Tennessee, Michigan, and Maryland before retiring in 2002. He and Evelyn returned to Florida in 2013 and enjoyed visiting their 3 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
