Major Raymond “Mac” McLaughlin, U.S. Army (Retired), passed away after a life devoted to service, sacrifice, faith, and family. He was a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War and later served in pivotal Cold War assignments in Europe, Korea, and the United States.
As an infantry officer with the 1st and 5th Infantry Divisions, Major McLaughlin led his men through some of the toughest battles of Vietnam, including the Iron Triangle, Song Be, An Lộc, and the Tet Offensive of 1968. He was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart, and later received the Bronze Star Medal for his leadership under fire. On a second tour, he served as a U.S. Army advisor to South Vietnamese forces, earning multiple decorations from the Republic of Vietnam for valor and service.
Following Vietnam, he continued his career in the Field Artillery branch, commanding a Pershing nuclear missile battery in Germany, training National Guard units, and later serving at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama and the Army Logistics Center at Fort Lee, Virginia. His final overseas posting was with the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea. Throughout his career he was entrusted with the Army’s most critical missions and served with courage and distinction.
A devoted Catholic, Major McLaughlin drew strength from his faith throughout his life and service. He carried that devotion into his final years, finding peace and guidance in his beliefs.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; his children Robert and Kim; Carol’s children Lorrie, Richie, and Bobby; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
His life was shaped by dedication, resilience, and faith, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
